Erlitou culture existed from 1900-1600 BCE in Henan, Hubei, Shaanxi, Shanxi provinces. Named after 1959 discovery of 3 km² largest settlement. Most Chinese archaeologists identify it with semi-legendary Xia dynasty. Western archaeologists reject link due to zero written records. Culture had four phases. Last two phases dated 1610-1555 BCE and 1564-1521 BCE by radiocarbon. Preceded by Peiligang, Yangshao, Longshan cultures.
