Founded 1888 as part of city library. Building from 1892-1898 in Neo-Renaissance style. State property since 1945. Exhibits prehistoric to Bulgarian Revival artifacts. Gold of Varna excavated 1972 occupies three halls. Manages Roman baths and Aladzha Monastery sites. Upcoming sites include episcopal basilica and Theotokos monastery. Has library, children's museum, gift shop, cafeteria. Courtyard hosts jazz festival.
