Ārya means Indo-Aryan speaker of Vedic language. Term originates from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Áryas used by ancient Indians and Iranians. Aryans opposed to anārya, dasyu, dāsa as non-Vedic peoples. Later denotes first three castes excluding Shudra. Implies respectable, honorable, noble qualities. Derived term āryavaṃśa means noble blood. Āryāvarta names ancient Aryan-inhabited India. Pali ariya evolves to Buddhist noble person. Descendants include modern Aryan in English, German Arier, Hindustani Indo-Aryan. Self-ascribed to worshipers of Vedic gods. Conveys good family, wise, excellent traits.
