Only 47 percent of Indian households are equipped with toilets, while 50 percent of the country's population takes care of their needs in the open. The remaining 3 percent of the population uses public toilets. According to India's census, by contrast, as many as 63.2 percent of Indian homes have a telephone. According to analysts, the data shows the complexity of India's system, where millions of people have access to modern technology and products while at the same time a huge number of the poor lack even basic amenities.
