A new phase of liquid crystals – breaking the existing rules of the game. Today's episode is about the success of Polish scientists, which was featured in the prestigious journal Science. Teams of scientists from the Military University of Technology and the University of Warsaw have made a groundbreaking discovery of a new liquid crystal phase – chiral and polar at the same time, in which rod-like, non-chiral organic molecules spontaneously arrange themselves, breaking both inversion and mirror symmetry, creating a chiral ferroelectric phase with unique optical, electrical, and mechanical properties.
