The atoms of the lightest elements - including hydrogen and helium - were mostly formed after the Big Bang, when the Universe cooled and particles merged together. And atoms of heavier elements - including gold - are still being formed in stars and in supernova explosions, answers Prof. Grzegorz Wrochna of the National Center for Nuclear Research.
