Salutary delay in reaction of crystal atoms to avalanche of photons from laser
Go to the source page

With X-ray laser pulses, it would be possible to study the structure of matter with great accuracy, only that... they destroy the sample. Using sufficiently short laser pulses, however, it will be possible to view the undisturbed structure of matter, according to scientists from a Polish-Japanese team. They showed that the atoms of a certain crystal react to the avalanche of photons from the laser with a certain delay.
