Nuclear weapons tests, satellite or nuclear power plant accidents cause radioactive plutonium to enter the environment. Traces are relatively easy to find in sediments accumulating on glaciers. Such studies have been carried out in the northern and southern hemispheres by scientists from the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
