Magnetite is a cheap and well-known iron oxide that is easily controlled by a magnet. A team from the University of Bialystok looked at how "seasoning" it with trace amounts of metals could add new functions: glowing and inhibiting microbial growth. The effect depends on the seasoning - and opens up different application paths.
