The detector, which records energy from near-infrared - all the way up to thermal radiation - at room temperature, was developed in Chinese research laboratories. Physicists from WAT in Warsaw took part in the discovery. The key is the unusual material Nb3I8, a crystal several atoms thick with unique quantum properties.
