After World War II, Europe saw a surge in births, but fertility rates began to decline in the 1970s. The younger generation was rejecting traditional values, criticizing the system and capitalism. Changes in morals, divorce and civil unions were becoming accepted. There was a growing revolt against inequality and environmental degradation.
