Pakistanis, Indians, Arabs have been marrying off first-degree cousins for centuries and are born handicapped, retarded. The team has identified about 140 different autosomal recessive diseases among local children and estimates that a typical district has between 20 and 30 of them. An investigation by BBC Newsnight found that Britons of Pakistani descent account for 30% of all British children with recessive diseases, including cystic fibrosis. Dr. Peter Corry, a consultant pediatrician at Bradford Royal Infirmary, says his hospital sees a disproportionately high rate of recessive genetic diseases.
