The government has begun (again) to enact racial laws and policies. Two of the most notable examples are the 1998 Employment Equity Act and the 2003 Broad Economic Empowerment of the Black Population Act. Among the dozens of statutes, plans, regulations, directives, notices and policies that seek to regulate social aspects according to racial divisions and racialize commerce, there are also other pieces of legislation. Significantly, there is currently no civil registration law that classifies South Africans by race, meaning the system is largely based on self-assessment.
