The total number of Karamojong cattle thieves killed by the combined security forces deployed to combat lawlessness in Karamoja now stands at 413. Micheal Longole, spokesman for the Karamoja Regional Police, said the thieves were immobilized from July 17, 2021 to July 2022, when the combined forces began disarmament exercises in the region. He said the thieves were immobilized as a result of an exchange of fire between them and security forces throughout the region. Longole told URN that forces managed to recover 557 weapons and 3167 pieces of ammunition during the same period. He explained that 10,074 cattle rustlers were arrested, 1,970 were temporarily detained and 370 were convicted. "During this period, our forces managed to recover 23,034 animals from the hands of animal thieves and we are continuing operations," he said.
