During the Early Dynastic period in Mesopotamia, life was centered around gods, whom believers considered to reside in specially built temples. The elite commissioned sculptures depicting themselves to represent their presence before the god. These sculptures, made of plaster or limestone, depicted men and women in traditional costumes and poses. They have been discovered in many places, including Nippur and Mari.
