Ancient DNA research has revealed that Stone Age people from Europe may have traveled by sea to Africa. The discovery suggests that hunter-gatherers may have crossed the Mediterranean on wooden canoes, moving from island to island. Genetic studies conducted on populations from the Maghreb region indicate that people living there more than 8,000 years ago had European hunter-gatherer ancestry.
