Joanna Zubr was a sergeant in the Army of the Warsaw Principality and the first woman to be awarded the Virtuti Militari Cross. She fought in the Napoleonic Wars, took part in campaigns and was decorated for bravery. After the war she settled in Poland, where she wrote her memoirs and died at the age of about 70.
