Suspected cattle thieves from the Karamojong tribe on Sunday evening, February 16, 2025, broke into Amujeju village in Amujeju parish in Kamutur district of Bukedea district and stole twelve head of cattle. The stolen cattle belong to Sadik Cherop, a resident of the same area. According to the report, the cattle were in a kraal and, surprisingly, the thieves forced their way in through a back entrance. Mr. James Peter Malinga, chairman of the local council of the Amujeju region, confirmed in an interview with this publication on Tuesday morning, February 18, 2025, that Mr. Cherop had reported the theft of the cattle to his office. "I received a report of cattle theft committed by Sadik Cherop yesterday, Monday, February 17, 2025, when I was at the market. However, when we searched the footprints, we found that they passed through the Isiagi swamp, connecting to the Koroc River, crossing the adjacent river," Mr. Malinga said. Mr. Malinga also added that the border river between Bukedea and Karamoja is currently dry, facilitating Karamojong access to neighboring subdistricts. The Koroc River was a barrier for the Karamojong, preventing them from crossing to the other side when there was water there, but now it has dried up and now they can cross, he added. Mr. Sadik Cherop, a cattle owner, told this publication that the footprints belong to two cattle rustlers wearing traditional local shoes. Mr. Jackson Ojekede, chairman of Kamutur LCIII district, who also serves as security chairman for the sub-district, called for government intervention.
