A study of the long-term effects of fathers' involvement on children found that the amount of father involvement in childhood had a direct effect on sons' cortisol patterns in adulthood. In addition, fathers' involvement reduced sons' substance abuse over a twenty-year period. The results confirm the important role of paternal care in early childhood.
