Intimate partner violence is common in Ethiopia in both urban and rural families. Some 81% of women believe that a husband has the right to beat his wife. Research in Ethiopia also found that nearly half to two-thirds of women who have ever been in a relationship have experienced violence from an intimate partner. Women suffer physical, emotional, sexual and economic violence from their intimate partners. She is often protected by family secrets, cultural norms, fear, shame, community resentment of domestic issues and social stigma.
