Women and men rarely socialize. Men do not impose this behavior, but it is in a woman's best interest to minimize contact with men for fear of aggression and jealousy from her husband. Traditionally, Alurs live in thatched huts made of grass. Farms in Alur clans are located in the central part of their territory. This helps maintain control over the territory. The Alurs were farmers and shepherds. They grew (and grow) millet, cassava, corn, yams, spinach and pumpkins. They herded cattle, goats and chickens. Goats and chickens were an important source of meat. Other important resources were salt, forest and wild animals, which were protected from other clans. In times of drought, fishing was important. The large herds of animals that the Alurs usually hunted were an additional source of meat so as not to deplete their own goats and hens, which moved to greener pastures.
